About Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrasound imaging has many different uses in today’s healthcare settings. Ultrasonography (Ultrasound) has been around since 1989 and has been one of the leading forms of medical technology in helping monitor women’s health issues. The ultrasound procedure involves using high-frequency sound waves to produce images from within the body. Ultrasound images can display the structure and positioning of the bodies internal organs.

Benefits of a Gynecologic Ultrasound

Gynecology is a medical specialty that has benefited greatly from ultrasound. The capabilities and benefits it can provide in general gynecology have lead to advancements in gynecological care.

Gynecological Ultrasound can be performed two ways. Transabdominal ultrasonography can be used, which uses a full bladder as means of sonographic transmission. Transvaginal ultrasonography is the other option, which uses a vaginal transducer for higher frequency and higher resolution images. Both a transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound may be used to get a better view of the whole pelvic area.

Frequently Asked Ultrasound Questions

How should I prepare for the procedure?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. Other preparation depends on the type of examination you will have.

What is general ultrasound imaging?

Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining images of internal organs by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body. The reflected sound waves’ echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. For example, an abdominal ultrasound image is a useful way of examining internal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and bladder. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time they can show movement of internal tissues and organs and enable physicians to see blood flow. This can help to diagnose a variety of conditions and to assess damage caused by illness.
