Healthy Summer Tips

Summer has arrived! As summertime brings many outdoor activities, it is important to stay safe while having fun in the sun. Here are 3 tips to help you make the most of the season:

1. Protect yourself from the sun

• Seek shade, especially during the heat of the day (midday)
• Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 15 SPF (applying every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, toweling off)
• Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing to shield your skin
• If you are applying both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first

2. Prevent mosquito bites

• Use insect repellent
• Wear long pants and long sleeves

3. Keep cool in extreme heat

• Drink plenty of fluids (preferably water)
• Wear lightweight clothing
• Check your local news for extreme heat alerts
• Know the signs of heat-related illnesses (learn more here)
• Don’t forget about your furry friends! Make sure to give your pets plenty of water and access to shade.
